About Natural Rhodochrosite: The Rose of Argentina
Rhodochrosite forms in hydrothermal veins where manganese-rich solutions deposit layer upon layer over millions of years. This process creates the characteristic pink and white banding visible in polished cabochons. The mineral rates 3.5 to 4 on the Mohs hardness scale, making it softer than quartz but suitable for rings worn with reasonable care. Most gem-quality rhodochrosite comes from the Andes Mountains of Argentina, where it holds status as the national gemstone. The color range spans pale rose to deep raspberry red, with the most saturated hues commanding higher prices. Translucent specimens without banding, sometimes called "raspberry spar," are rarer and appear in our premium settings. Each stone shows its own internal pattern of curved bands or solid color zones, determined by the specific conditions during its formation underground.
