Dip the opal ring in the soapy water and then use a soft cloth or a soft toothbrush to gently clean any crevices/grooves which there may be in the ring setting. This will remove the majority of grime which may be attached to the ring. Once the ring is clean dry it with a lint-free cloth.
If your ring consists of a doublets or triplets it is not advisable to soak them in water. This is because the water may affect the glue that holds the parts together. It could result in the opal pieces separating. To clean a doublet or triplet opal, use a soft cloth with some mild cleaning solution on it to wipe the ring. This will remove any body oils or dirt which may be on the ring without affecting the opal.
