Rhodochrosite earned the name "Inca Rose" from deposits found in 13th-century Argentine silver mines, where Incan workers encountered the pink-banded stone during ore extraction. Today, gem-quality rhodochrosite still comes primarily from South American sources, with the finest translucent specimens originating from the Sweet Home Mine in Colorado before its 2004 closure. The stone's color ranges from pale pink to deep raspberry red, determined by manganese concentration and trace elements present during crystallization. Banded specimens show alternating layers of pink rhodochrosite and white mangite or calcite, creating the swirled patterns common in cabochon cuts. Solid-color material without banding is rarer and typically commands higher value among collectors.
