Ammolite is an organic gemstone cut from the fossilized shells of ammonites, extinct cephalopods related to modern nautilus. The gem material consists of aragonite layers that create its iridescent color display.
Commercial-grade ammolite comes from the Bearpaw Formation along the eastern Rocky Mountains, concentrated in Alberta, Canada. Smaller deposits exist in Montana, but Canadian sources produce most gem-quality material.
Clean ammolite with a soft damp cloth only. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, chemicals, and prolonged sun exposure. Store pieces separate from harder gemstones to prevent scratches on the surface.
