Labradorite, a feldspar mineral rating 6-6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, shows flashes of blue and gold beneath its gray surface. This effect, called labradorescence, results from light scattering between microscopic layers within the stone. Hematite, an iron oxide mineral at 5.5-6.5 Mohs, displays a metallic gray luster that ancient Romans associated with protection. Gray moonstone belongs to the orthoclase feldspar group and rates 6-6.5 on the Mohs scale. Deposits come from Sri Lanka, India, and Madagascar. The stone shows a floating light effect called adularescence, caused by alternating layers of orthoclase and albite feldspars diffracting light.
