Natural Gray Gemstones Set in .925 Silver Rings

Gray gemstones occur across dozens of mineral families, giving this neutral color a surprising range of optical properties. Labradorite, a feldspar mineral rating 6-6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, shows flashes of blue and gold beneath its gray surface. This effect, called labradorescence, results from light scattering between microscopic layers within the stone. Hematite, an iron oxide mineral at 5.5-6.5 Mohs, displays a metallic gray luster that ancient Romans associated with protection. Gray moonstone belongs to the orthoclase feldspar group and rates 6-6.5 on the Mohs scale. Deposits come from Sri Lanka, India, and Madagascar. The stone shows a floating light effect called adularescence, caused by alternating layers of orthoclase and albite feldspars diffracting light. Our silversmiths set these gray stones in .925 sterling silver, an alloy containing 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% copper for durability. Each ring ships free within the United States. Add a gray stone ring to your order and see how neutral tones work with your existing pieces.
What gray gemstones do you carry in rings?
Our gray ring collection includes labradorite, gray moonstone, hematite, gray agate, gray chalcedony, and smoky quartz, among other natural gray stones.
Are gray stones durable enough for daily wear?
Most gray gemstones in our collection rate between 5.5 and 7 on the Mohs hardness scale. Labradorite and moonstone suit regular wear with normal care, while softer stones work best for occasional use.
What causes the flash in gray labradorite?
Labradorescence occurs when light enters the stone and scatters between thin, repeated layers of different feldspar compositions within the mineral structure.
