Gray gemstones form through specific geological conditions that create their signature colors. Labradorite develops its gray base and blue-green flash (called labradorescence) from thin layers within the feldspar crystal structure. This effect occurs when light enters and reflects between internal planes. Gray moonstone, another feldspar variety, shows a floating light effect called adularescence caused by alternating layers of orthoclase and albite. Both stones rate 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs hardness scale, suitable for regular wear with reasonable care. Tourmalinated quartz combines clear or milky quartz (Mohs 7) with black tourmaline needles that grew inside the crystal during formation. The random pattern of inclusions means no two stones look alike.
