Dichroic glass originated in aerospace applications during the 1950s and 1960s. NASA developed the coating process for satellite optics and face shields. Artists began working with the material in the 1970s after surplus supplies became available. The manufacturing process involves vaporizing metal oxides like titanium, chromium, or magnesium in a vacuum chamber, then depositing microscopic layers onto glass substrates. The term dichroic means two colors in Greek. Light waves interact with each metallic layer differently. Some wavelengths pass through while others reflect back. This selective transmission creates the color-shift effect visible in these rings. The coating bonds permanently to the glass base and will not peel, scratch, or fade under normal wear.
