The Victorian period produced three distinct jewelry phases. Early Victorian (1837-1860) favored romantic motifs like serpents, hearts, and nature themes. Mid-Victorian pieces (1860-1880) incorporated darker stones and memorial elements. Late Victorian (1880-1901) introduced lighter, more delicate metalwork with star and crescent shapes. Natural stones in this collection include amethyst, garnet, onyx, and turquoise, all materials popular during Victoria's reign. Amethyst held particular favor; large deposits discovered in Brazil during the 1800s made the purple quartz accessible to middle-class buyers. Garnet, with its deep red color and 6.5-7.5 Mohs hardness, appeared in clusters and graduated designs throughout the era.
