Morrisonite jasper comes from the Owyhee Mountains in eastern Oregon, near the Idaho border. The stone takes its name from the Morrison Ranch, where it was first discovered in the 1940s.
Morrisonite jasper is rare because it forms in a single deposit with limited access. The original mining site produced finite material, and much of today's supply comes from older collections.
Morrisonite jasper rates 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs hardness scale. This makes it resistant to scratches and suitable for pendant jewelry worn on a regular basis.
