Bumble bee jasper is not a true jasper but a calcium carbite mineral formed from volcanic sulfur deposits. The yellow coloring comes from sulfur, while the orange and brown bands contain realgar and orpiment. Because of its sulfur content, this stone rates between 5 and 5.5 on the Mohs hardness scale and requires a protective setting—our sterling silver bezels and prong settings shield the stone while letting its color patterns show. The stone was first introduced to the gem market in the 1990s after miners discovered deposits on the Indonesian volcano's slopes.
