Helenite carries a specific origin story. When Mount St. Helens erupted in Washington State, the intense heat fused silica-rich ash into natural glass. Modern helenite recreates this process using actual volcanic material from the eruption site, heated until it melts and reforms. The result is a dense glass with a Mohs hardness near 5, suitable for jewelry wear with reasonable care. The green color comes from trace iron and chromium within the volcanic debris. Some pieces show blue or red tones depending on mineral content and heating conditions. Unlike synthetic stones made from generic materials, helenite requires genuine Mount St. Helens volcanic matter as its base.
